As a young teen immersing myself in the anarcho-punk counterculture I was energized by its depiction of a plausible egalitarian and free society that rejected hierarchy and exploitation in all forms of social and cultural life (and not just in terms of law and the state, as more common right-wing libertarian science fiction limits itself to), but unlike so many of the political tracts I read in the anarchist tradition it did not present its world as a perfect utopia. What makes it your favorite? "The Dispossessed" was one of the first works of science fiction that I ever read that posited an optimistic future, but one that was believably imperfect and inhabited by relatable, fully formed characters.
